Upstage DancerTHE DREAMER (Book by Thomas Kett. Words & Music by Stevie Hughes)

THE DREAMER enables the students to fully exploit their talents in singing, dancing and acting. Each of the actors play several parts including characters in the dream and nightmare sequences. This 50 minute contemporary musical is an exciting and well-paced piece, both poignant and humorous, supported by a great score exploring different musical styles and offering the actors the exciting opportunity to be creative in a group setting.

“Bobby spends most of his (or her) time day-dreaming and is always getting into trouble with her head teacher, Mr Brutle. Her mum and grandparents get equally frustrated with her as she often refuses to get out of bed in the mornings because she enjoys her dreams too much. But one day, her best friend, Jake listens to one of her dreams of how she climbed to the top of a mountain for treasure, only to be confronted by a dozen fierce creatures. This is depicted by a big tribal number with beating drums and tribal masks. Jake suggests she starts writing her dreams down. Bobby thinks this is a great idea and gets down to work but when she takes her book to school, it gets lost and ends up in Mr Brutle's hands. Suspense grows as nobody knows what the head will make of it but, surprisingly, he loves it and furthermore, promises to get it published. Bobby's world is suddenly turned around and she becomes the toast of the school but can any of them survive the dreams?”

TIME BUSTERS is a roller-coaster journey exploring the different musical and dance styles of the past and present. Full of exciting roles it has proved to be a humorous and challenging musical in a week.

“It's Mikey's birthday and his mum buys him a flashy watch which his nan tries on. She suddenly pushes one of the buttons and to Mikey's horror, she disappears! Mikey and his friends race to buy similar watches and the search for his Nan begins in earnest. Amidst smoke and confusion, the gang travel precariously through time, fact and fiction. They visit the Stone Age period; the roaring twenties; the Wild West and the mythical world of Sinbad before finding themselves arriving in the company of a group of cool, smooth-sounding Tamla Motown singers! When they do eventually recover nan, she is about to be kidnapped by a bunch of Cuban pirates, but the gang rescue her and manage to return home just in the nick of time!”
